The Life of Audrey

Coming Home

Sunday was the day that we got to bring Audrey home. The day went pretty smoothly, despite having to wait a couple hours on the doctor to check on Barbara before discharging her.

Audrey had already been OK’d for discharge. She had a second check from the doctor on Saturday night. Again, everything was fine. She had dropped from 9 lb. 9 oz. at birth to 8 lb. 12 oz., but, by the time we left the hospital, she was back up to 9 lb. 2 oz. Her first appointment in the doctor’s office is Friday. We will get more details about her overall health then.

We were a little bit anxious about bringing her home. We were really excited about being at home and sleeping in our own bed and just being comfortable. (Barbara was also excited about not being awakened 10 times per night for blood pressure readings, temperature checks, drug administration, etc.) But we were also a bit nervous about not having the nursery to take Audrey to for the swing so that we could get just a bit of rest. And we were just nervous about making sure that we were going to do things right for our new baby.

As far as Audrey goes, the day started well. She slept for over 2 and a half hours before we left the hospital. She only woke up when the nurse cut off her ankle ID and removed her alarm tag. She didn’t seem to be bothered by the short car ride home. She seemed to enjoy being in her fuzzy Bundle Me in her car seat. The rest of the day went really well also. She ate and then slept for about 3 hours. When she woke up, she ate again and then slept about 4 more hours. It was only when we were ready to go to bed that Audrey was not so cooperative about going to sleep. It took about an hour and a half before she finally went to sleep, but we decided that it was not a bad price to pay for all the peaceful sleeping Audrey had done since we got home. She didn’t seem to care for sleeping in her Pack N Play; we weren’t sure if she didn’t like being flat on her back (she was inclined in the hospital crib) or if she didn’t like having so much open space around her (the hospital crib was much more confining). So we let her sleep in her carrier in the Bundle Me. It was much more like her sleeping experience in the hospital, and she slept very well. I don’t think it’s a good idea to “argue” with a sleeping baby. Once we got her to sleep, she slept for several hours, and so did we.
